Research Notes on Acute Interstitial Pneumonia
Acute intersitial pneumonia is one of the idiopathic interstitial pneumonias, which means there are no known reasons for their development. Acute interstitial pneumonia develops suddenly and progresses to a severe stage very quickly.1 The signs are cough, fever, and difficulty breathing, which are rather common symptoms, so they often go on for two weeks before people seek medical attention.2
Fast Facts:
- As of 2005 there is no known cure for acute interstitial pneumonia.2
- About 60% die of acute interstitial pneumonia within six months, and those who survive have seriously damaged lungs.1
- Acute interstitial pneumonia is also called Hamman-Rich syndrome, and has a disturbing radiologic feature similar to bronchiolitis obliterans; the appearance of ground glass like structures in the lungs3
