Research Notes on Acute Heart Failure Treatment

Treatment for acute heart failure typically requires a hospital stay. In the hospital, you will be given medications to help your heart work better and oxygen therapy to help you get enough oxygen to your body. Also, your heart and lung function will be closely monitored along with your blood pressure and other vital signs.1 The main medicines for treating heart failure include diuretics, ACE inhibitors, aldosterone, angiotensin II receptor blockers, beta blockers, isosorbide /hydralazine, and digoxin.2

Fast Facts:

  • Your doctor may order exams, such as a stress test, EKG, or echocardiogram, that will give specific information about the function of your heart.3
  • Let your doctor know right away if you have a sudden weight gain or weight loss. They can signal a need to adjust your treatment.
  • If your doctor advises you to limit your intake of fluids, carefully watch how much you drink during the day.2
  • It is important to watch your sodium intake; sometimes just eating a sausage or something like sauerkraut with extremely high sodium content is enough to cause an acute episode.4
