Research Notes on Acute Heart Failure Symptoms
Acute heart failure symptoms can include sudden weight gain, sudden shortness of breath, increased swelling of the lower limbs, swelling or pain in the abdomen, rapid or irregular heartbeat with palpitations that may cause the heart to stop beating, cough with pink, foamy mucus, chest pain, and increased fatigue.1
Fast Facts:
- Acute heart failure is an emergency situation that occurs when something suddenly affects your heart's ability to function.1
- Symptoms are similar to those of chronic heart failure but more severe, and start or worsen suddenly.1
- Worsening symptoms usually take place over the course of hours or days. When the heart suddenly starts to fail, fluid rapidly builds up in the lungs.2
