Research Notes on Acute Coronary Syndrome Treatment
There are a couple of treatments for acute coronary syndrome (ACS). When a patient first arrives at the ER, an electrocardiogram (ECG) is given followed by oxygen and an aspirin if one was not taken at home.1 If the ECG shows a myocardial infarction, medication called thrombolytics may be administered.2 A primary coronary angioplasty may be performed if medication is not given.2 If the ECG does not show typical changes, the patient is treated with aspirin, heparin, and opioids if pain persists. If blood tests are positive for cardiac troponins, an angiography is performed as soon as possible.2
Fast Facts:
- ACS includes unstable angina and heart attacks.3
- Thrombolics should not be used if the patient has had any recent major bleeding or has a history of stroke.1
- A cardiac perfusion scan may also be given to see if your heart is getting enough blood.3
