Research Notes on Acupuncture for Attention Deficit Disorder
Acupuncture has become a popular therapy for children suffering from attention deficit disorder (ADD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).1 The ear may be stimulated through noninvasive procedures so it is often the favored treatment location for children.1 Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture are often the first choice for children newly diagnosed with ADD because of the safe nature of the therapy.
Fast Facts:
- One study was conducted that showed that the positive results of acupuncture lasted longer than Ritalin (methylphenidate) when stopped and recurrence rates were low.2
- Parents interested in pursuing natural therapies for children suffering from ADD should consult a practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine or a registered acupuncturist.3
- Many health plans now cover partial or full costs of acupuncturist visits.
- Acupuncture uses fine needles that are placed at specific locations in the body called meridians to unblock the ‘qi’, or energy, and restore balance to the body.
