Research Notes on Acupuncture and Cancer
Acupuncture is increasingly being used in the fight against cancer to help control the side effects of chemotherapy drugs such as nausea and vomiting.1 Small clinical trials have also determined that acupuncture may be useful in preventing hot flashes in men associated with hormone therapy used to treat prostate cancer.1 It is very important that the acupuncture practitioner use single-use, sterile needles to avoid contamination.1
Fast Facts:
- Recent studies involving breast cancer patients report fewer episodes of depression, dry mouth, headache, constipation and anxiety in patients receiving acupuncture.2
- Can be used to control cancer pain.3
- Some studies point to acupuncture increasing healing time post surgical removal of cancerous tumors.4
