Research Notes on Acupuncture and Bipolar Disorder
Acupuncture is undergoing clinical research in the treatment of bipolar disorder.1 Acupuncture has been in existence in Western countries for over three thousand years.2 Current research is positive, showing acupuncture relieving and modulating stress responses in individuals suffering from bipolar disorder and reducing symptoms.3
Fast Facts:
- More than 1.9 million people in the U.S. suffer from bipolar disorder.4
- A study at the University of Arizona College of Medicine showed positive results using acupuncture for the treatment of depression.4
- The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) completed an acupuncture and bipolar disorder study; currently no study results have been posted.1
- Acupuncture is used in 40-50 percent of medicinal care in China.2
