Research Notes on Acromegaly Treatment
The goal of treatment for acromegaly is focused on returning the production of growth hormone (GH) to normal and reducing effects on the pituitary and surrounding tissues. Surgery to remove the pituitary tumor is the most often course of treatment. Medication is also often needed. Somatostatin analogs, GH receptor antagonists and dopamine agonists are the three kinds of medication that are used in treating acromegaly.1
Fast Facts:
- Surgery is most successful if a patient has blood GH levels below 45 ng/ml and the tumor is smaller than 10 millimeters (mm) in diameter.1
- Radiation therapy is may be used for those who do not respond to medication or if there is remaining tumor after surgery.1
- In cases where the disease goes into remission, the patient still must be monitored for years for possible recurrence.1
