Research Notes on Acne Treatments

Mild acne may be treated with proper skin care and over the counter medications. If this does not clear up acne, a prescription cream may be needed. In moderate to severe cases, various medications may be used.1 Other treatment options in severe cases of acne may include chemical peels, microdermabrasion, laser or light therapy.2

Fast Facts:

  • Squeezing or picking at acne can lead to scarring and infection.3
  • Prescription medications may take four to eight weeks to show results.2
  • Oral prescription medications for acne should not be used during pregnancy.2
