Research Notes on Acne Causes

Acne that begins during puberty is the result of increased sensitivity to the hormone testosterone, which is present in both boys and girls. Testosterone causes secretion of excessive sebum from the skin’s sebaceous glands. Skin cells rapidly divide, which sometimes block the opening of hair follicles. The resulting build up of sebum in the blockage induces growth of blackheads. Acne sometimes seems to run in certain families, so there may be a genetic factor that makes some people more prone to it.
