Research Notes on Acne Causes
Acne is caused by plugged hair follicles. The follicles are plugged by oil and dead skin cells.1 Acne is common in teens, when the body starts producing more oil in the skin.2 As the oil and dead skin cells mix and plug the follicles, bacteria builds up and causes more irritation.2
Fast Facts:
- The hair follicles are also called pores.3
- A "whitehead" is caused by oil and skin cells plugging the pore.2
- A "blackhead" isn't caused by dirt, but by air touching the plug in the pore.2
- Acne tends to run in families.3
- Acne can be triggered by hormonal changes, cosmetics, some drugs, and high humidity and sweating.3
- Contrary to popular belief, foods do not cause acne.1
