Research Notes on Acitretin
Your physician may recommend acitretin to treat severe psoriasis. Acitretin is available as a capsule that is taken once a day, usually with meals. Your physician will determine a proper dosing schedule for your situation, and your dosage may be gradually increased. It is very important that women who wish to become pregnant do not take acitretin. Pregnancy is not recommended for at least three years following acitretin treatment, and at least two negative pregnancy tests are required before a prescription of acitretin is written. Males undergoing acitretin treatment will be advised that the drug is present in seminial fluid, and safe contraception methods should be practiced. You should not donate blood for a period of three years after acitretin treatment.1
Fast Facts:
- Dry skin, photosensitivity, headaches, hair loss, mood swings, dry eyes, muscle and joint pain, and liver damage are all potential side effects of acitretin treatment.2
- Patients treated with acitretin will be closely monitored for blood sugar disturbances such as hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia. If you are undergoing acitretin therapy and develop symptoms of either of these conditions, seek emergency medical attention.1
- Acitretin is the generic drug commonly sold under the brand name Soriatane.1
