Acid reflux is a condition where stomach acid makes its way to the esophagus causing discomfort. This condition occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter opens and stomach contents rise to the esophagus. Its exact cause is still unclear, but several factors such as obesity, pregnancy and smoking may contribute to the development of acid reflux.
