Research Notes on Acetylcysteine
Acetylcysteine is a mucolytic drug commonly known as Mucomyst. It is commonly inhaled by nebulizer into the lungs to help loosen secretions to aid in mucus expectoration. Acetylcysteine is also used intravenously to treat Acetaminophen overdose.

- Acetylcysteine can be used orally for the prevention of radiocontrast-induced nephropathy, which is a form of renal failure
- Acetylcysteine comes in 10% or 20% dosages
- Acetylcysteine may be introduced directly into a particular segment of the bronchopulmonary tree by inserting (under local anesthesia and direct vision) a small plastic catheter into the trachea
