Research Notes on Acetaminophen vs. NSAIDs for Arthritis

Acetaminophen and NSAIDs are both effective medications for arthritis. NSAIDs, such as aspirin and ibuprofen, help relieve the pain and inflammation of arthritis, but should only be used for a short term. Acetaminophen will help to relieve pain, but not inflammation, and is a better choice for long-term use.1

Fast Facts:

  • Both acetaminophen and NSAIDs can be purchased over-the-counter.1
  • Most adults can take up to 4000 mg of acetaminophen each day.2
  • NSAIDs can cause upset stomach and peptic ulcers.3
