Research Notes on Accupril and Pregnancy
Accupril is not recommended for use during pregnancy unless there is absolutely no other alternative medication available. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has listed Accupril as a category C medication during the first trimester of pregnancy, and a category D medication during the second and third trimesters. If you become pregnant or wish to become pregnant while undergoing treatment with Accupril, consult with your physician immediately.1
Fast Facts:
- Accupril has been shown to cause birth defects and fetal death in animals when taken during the first trimester, and in humans when used in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy.2
- Accupril is known to be excreted in breast milk, and the medication may cause harm to a breastfeeding baby.2
- Accupril is a brand name for the generic drug quinapril that is sometimes recommended in the treatment of hypertension or congestive heart failure.2
