Research Notes on Acarbose and Pregnancy
Acarbose (Precose) is considered relatively safe to use during pregnancy. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has labeled acarbose as a category B medication, meaning that studies done in animals did not indicate any risk to the developing fetus. As with most medication, women who are pregnant or plan to become pregnant should consult with there physician before using acarbose.1 Fast Facts:
- Consult with your physician before breastfeeding, as acarbose is known to be excreted into breast milk.2
- Acarbose is a prescription medication used along with diet to treat patients with type 2 diabetes.3
- Acarbose is available in tablet form, normally taken three times a day.3
