Research Notes on Acarbose Uses
Acarbose is used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes. It is sold under the brand name Precose. It works by slowing the digestion of carbohydrates, which helps control blood sugar levels. Acarbose is often used in combination with other diabetes medications.1
Fast Facts:
- Acarbose may interact with sulfonylureas, insulin, niacin, isoniazid, or estrogen. Some of these medications can cause acarbose to become less effective.2
- Acarbose side effects may include diarrhea, bloating, nausea, and weight loss.3
- Acarbose should not be taken while suffering from diabetic ketoacidosis or cirrhosis.4
