Acanthamoeba is a common amoeba found in the environment. One way of contracting an acanthamoeba infection is through improper and unhygienic handling of contact lenses; the amoeba enters the eye and causes acanthamoeba keratitis, an eye condition which includes symptoms such as severe eye pain, redness, and photophobia. The infection can lead to permanent blindness; however, it can be treated, especially when diagnosed promptly.
