Research Notes on Acalculous Cholecystitis
Acalculous cholecystitis is an inflammation of the gallbladder in the absence of gall stones.1 It is a rare disorder most commonly seen in critically ill people.2 Acalculous cholecystitis occurs in about 5% to 10% of all cases of cholecystitis.3

- Caused by various long standing conditions including sickle cell disease, diabetes and AIDS.4
- Immediate causes of acalculous cholecystitis include burns, severe trauma, and pancreatitis.5
- Standard treatment is surgery.6
