Research Notes on Ablation for Arrhythmia

Cardiac ablation is a procedure commonly used for the treatment of some arrhythmias. Your heartbeat is controlled by a constant flow of electricity through the heart. A short-circuit anywhere along the electrical pathway can disrupt the normal flow causing an arrhythmia. The ablation procedure is performed by inserting narrow, flexible catheters into a blood vessel through the groin or neck, threading it through the vein until it reaches the heart. There are electrodes at the tip of the catheter that are used to conduct an electrophysiology (EP) study to locate the location of the short-circuit in the heart. Once the area that is causing the short-circuit is located, it is destroyed or blocked by sending energy through the catheters.1

Fast Facts:

  • The type of ablation performed depends on the the type of arrhythmia.2
  • Cardiac ablation is relatively safe. However, with any procedure there may be risks.2
  • The treatment has become the procedure of choice for patients with arrhythmia who have not responded well to drug therapy.3
