Abdominojugular Test

Research Notes on Abdominojugular Test

Doctors perform an abdominojugular test to measure the amount of pressure of the jugular veins.1 Jugular veins bring deoxygenated blood from the head back to the heart. An elevated jugular venous pressure may be a sign of active or impending congestive heart failure.2 Healthy individuals will have a temporary increase in pressure for a heartbeat or two before venous pressure returns to normal.1

Fast Facts:

  • This is sometimes known as hepatojugular reflux.2
  • During this test a medical professional will apply firm pressure over your abdomen with their flat hand.
  • The test normally lasts between 10 and 60 seconds.1
