An abdominal ultrasound is a diagnostic tool used to see organs and structures within the abdomen. This procedure is used to help diagnose many things such as cysts, tumors, abscesses and obstructions. It can also detect stones in the gallbladder and kidneys. Abdominal ultrasound can also be used to help in placement of a needle during a biopsy of abdominal tissue.1
