Abdominal Trauma

This WisdomCard managed by: Tara Salamone

Abdominal trauma can be divided into two main categories: penetrating abdominal trauma, and blunt abdominal trauma. Penetrating abdominal injury implies that either a gun shot wound or a stab wound has penetrated the abdominal cavity. Blunt abdominal injuries result from a direct blow or external compression against a stationary object, for example a seat belt. The liver and spleen seem to be the most frequently injured organ. The leading causes of abdominal trauma are motor vehicle accidents, and auto vs. pedestrian injuries. In children, falls, bicycle accidents and abuse also contribute.
