Research Notes on Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Treatment
Treatment options for an abdominal aortic aneurysm depend on the size of the aneurysm and whether it is causing symptoms.1 With a small aneurysm that is not causing any symptoms, a doctor may suggest no treatment other than monitoring the aneurysm. If an aneurysm is medium in size, surgery may be discussed. Surgery is usually needed if an aneurysm is large, growing fast, leaking, tender, or painful.2
Fast Facts:
- When monitoring is the course of treatment, regular ultrasounds are typically performed to see if the aneurysm is getting larger.2
- Surgery for abdominal aortic aneurysm may involve a traditional open repair or endovascular stent grafting.1
- If an abdominal aortic aneurysm has or is ready to rupture, emergency surgery is needed.3
