Research Notes on Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Risk Factors
Various factors may increase the risk of an abdominal aortic aneurysm. Known risk factors include advanced age, being male, high blood pressure, smoking, alcohol use, and a family history of abdominal aortic aneurysms.1 High cholesterol, diabetes mellitus, arteritis, arteriosclerosis, genetic diseases of connective tissue, and mycotic infection are also possible risk factors for an abdominal aortic aneurysm.2

- Trauma to the arteries can increase the risk of an abdominal aortic aneurysm.3
- About eighty percent of aortic aneurysms may be connected to arteriosclerosis.2
- An abdominal aortic aneurysm affects about five percent of the men over sixty years of age.2
