Various factors may increase the risk of an abdominal aortic aneurysm. Known risk factors include advanced age, being male, high blood pressure, smoking, alcohol use, and a family history of abdominal aortic aneurysms.1 High cholesterol, diabetes mellitus, arteritis, arteriosclerosis, genetic diseases of connective tissue, and mycotic infection are also possible risk factors for an abdominal aortic aneurysm.2

  • About eighty percent of aortic aneurysms may be connected to arteriosclerosis.2
