Research Notes on Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Causes
The precise cause of an abdominal aortic aneurysm is not known.1 There are a numerous factors that may play a role in causing abdominal aortic aneurysms. These factors may include atherosclerosis, genetics, aging, injury, infections, or inflammation.2 Tobacco use and high blood pressure may also play a role in the development of abdominal aortic aneurysms.1

- Arteriosclerosis may be connected to around eighty percent of the aortic aneurysms that occur.3
- People who have certain genetic diseases of the connective tissue such as Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and Marfan syndrome may be at increased risk of abdominal aortic aneurysm.3
- About seventy-five percent of all aortic aneurysms are abdominal.1
