Research Notes on Abdominal Aorta
The abdominal aorta (aorta abdominalis) is the portion of the aorta located right behind the diaphragm in the abdominal cavity. The aorta is the largest artery in the body. It runs alongside the inferior vena cava and gets smaller as it descends in the body.1 There are many arteries that branch off the abdominal aorta such as the celiac, the superior mesenteric, and the iliacs to name a few.2
Fast Facts:
- The abdominal aorta is a common area for aortic aneurysm to occur.
- The abdominal aorta splits into two other large arteries in the body which are the right and left common iliacs.
- The abdominal aorta, as well as other regions of the aorta, carries oxygenated blood to the body's systems.3
