Research Notes on Abatacept Precautions and Warnings
Before taking abatacept, it is important to learn about all possible precautions and warnings associated with the medication. Patients should not take abatacept if they currently have an infection, as abatacept can increase the risk of infections. Abatacept should be used with caution in patients with a history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), diabetes, HIV, hepatitis B, tuberculosis, allergies, and those who have been exposed to chickenpox.1 For a complete list of precautions and warnings associated with abatacept, see the following links below.

- Women who are pregnant should consult with their physician before taking abatacept, as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has labeled the medication a category C drug, meaning the effects of the medication have not been completely studied in pregnant women.1
- Abatacept may also lead to certain side effects such as hives, wheezing, trouble breathing, and unusual swelling.1
- Abatacept (Orencia) is a prescription medication used to treat moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis symptoms.2
