Abarelix

Research Notes on Abarelix

  • Abarelix is a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) antagonist that lowers the male hormone testosterone in the blood. By reducing the testosterone in the blood stream, it also stops the growth of the cancer cells in the prostate. When Abarelix was approved for public sale, its name was changed to Plenaxis. Praecis Pharmaceuticals (the creators of Plenaxis) had Plenaxis (Abarelix) production stopped in 2005, due to economic reasons. Plenaxis is no longer available to patients, unless they were perscribed the medicine before it was pulled from the market.
