Research Notes on ADHD vs. Hypothyroidism
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and hypothyroidism are conditions that can affect both children and adults. ADHD is a neurobehavioral disorder that causes an inability to focus and listen to direction.1 Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland is not producing enough hormones to regulate metabolism.2 In children, hypothyroidism can cause slowed mental development, along with other symptoms.2
Fast Facts:
- ADHD affects three to five percent of children in the United States.1
- ADHD can continue into adulthood.1
- Approximately one in three-thousand infants is born with hypothyroidism.2
