Research Notes on ADHD and Teens
Symptom of ADHD may appear to be less severe as the child grows older, but, in most cases, they do persist. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, about 80 percent of those who required medication for ADHD as children still need it as teenagers. Activities such as sports, drama and debate teams can be good places to channel excess energy and develop friendships. Talk to your pediatrician if your teenager shows signs of severe problems, such as depression, drug abuse or gang-related activities.1

- Adolescents with ADHD are often less mature than other teens.2
- Parents play an important role in helping teenagers become independent.3
- Not all children with ADD (ADHD) are hyperactive. Some are inattentive and show no signs of hyperactivity.4
