Research Notes on ADHD and Marriage

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) can have a big impact on a marriage if one partner has it.1 Without proper communication, a partner's inability to concentrate can be misconstrued which may lead to problems in the marriage.2 An ADHD coach can provide you and your spouse with tips while helping you both to come up with a strategy that works for both of you.2

Fast Facts:

  • If you are the spouse with ADHD, try meditation or a relaxation technique. By doing so, you may be able to prevent being overstimulated which may help you to stay focused on your spouse.2
  • If anger is one of the symptoms of your ADHD, be open and upfront with your spouse. An ADHD coach can help you to develop techniques to calm down.1
  • As the non-ADHD spouse, do not make it a habit of reminding your spouse about tasks or appointments. Eventually, this may come across as nagging.1
