Research Notes on ADHD and Manganese
There is speculation that soy-based formula may contribute to the development of ADHD. An animal study performed at the University of California, Irvine, discovered a possible link between behavioral problems and manganese. Researchers noticed behavioral changes after administering increasing levels of manganese to rats during infancy. Manganese is found in high levels in soy milk.1
Fast Facts:
- ADHD is a neurobehavioral disorder which causes hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattention.2
- Higher levels of manganese exposure reduced dopamine, the key neurotransmitter in inhibiting ADHD behavior.1
- Approximately three to five percent of children worldwide are diagnosed with ADHD, two million children in the United States.3
