Research Notes on ADHD and Intelligence

ADHD is a behavioral disorder with symptoms of inattention and hyperactivity. ADHD does not determine a person's level of intelligence, and it can affect people regardless of intelligence. People with ADHD may be mistaken as less intelligent because ADHD makes it more difficult for them to focus during problem solving. ADHD may also impair the way a person learns from past experiences.1

Fast Facts:

  • ADHD does not affect intelligence, but it does affect a person's ability to apply the knowledge that they have.2
  • Trends of people with ADHD performing poorly on certain tests probably results from the test takers' lack of ability to focus on the test.2
  • People with ADHD tend to have high IQ scores and tend to be more creative than people without ADHD.3
  • The design of most intelligence tests can hinder the scores of people with ADHD.2
