Research Notes on ADHD and Divorce
A study released in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology reported parents of ADHD children are twice as likely to divorce by the time their child is eight years old.1 ADHD is a neurobehavioral disorder which causes hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattention.2 The behaviors can be treated with medication, psychotherapy, and education. Unfortunately, uncontrollable and inappropriate behavior may cause problems for family dynamics.3
Fast Facts:
- The study included 282 teens and/or young adults diagnosed with ADHD in childhood and 205 parents.1
- The results showed 22.7 percent of the parents of ADHD children divorced by the time the child was eight.1
- 12.6 percent of parents whose children were not diagnosed with ADHD separated by the time the child was eight.1
- ADHD with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and conduct disorder (CD) increased the risk of parents divorcing.1
