Research Notes on ADHD and Alcohol Addiction
Studies have shown that approximately 25% of adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may also struggle with an alcohol or drug addiction.1 Depression, which may be the result of low self-esteem caused by ADHD, is often one of the factors that leads to alcohol addiction.1 Some adults with ADHD may also use alcohol to self-medicate themselves for the restlessness that is common with ADHD.2
Fast Facts:
- Adults with ADHD are more likely to treat emotional and physical problems with alcohol than non-ADHD adults.2
- Having a weak support system can also contribute to an alcohol addiction for someone with ADHD.2
- When seeking treatment for an alcohol addiction, it is important to join a program that deals with ADHD and the addiction.2
