Research Notes on ADHD Types

Most people with a diagnosis of ADHD fall into one of three subtypes. Knowing this subtype helps doctors prescribe the right medication to manage specific ADHD symptoms.1 Those who display both inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity symptoms may have combination type ADHD.1 Those with predominantly inattentive type ADHD experience inattention without hyperactivity-impulsivity symptoms.1 People who have hyperactivity-impulsivity symptoms without inattention may have predominantly hyperactive-impulsive type ADHD.1

Fast Facts:

  • Individuals who have difficulty sustaining attention in tasks or activities, are easily distracted, fail to follow through on instructions, or who routinely fail to finish projects exhibit symptoms of inattention.2
  • Those who consistently feel and act restless, have difficulty acting quietly, talk excessively, and feel the need to constantly be in motion exhibit symptoms of hyperactivity-impulsive ADHD.2
  • The majority of people suffer from either the combination or inattentive types of ADHD.3
  • Most females with ADHD (80%) have inattention without hyperactivity, or inattentive type ADHD.3
  • Less than 3% of all people diagnosed with ADHD have hyperactivity without inattention.3
  • Using brain scans, Dr. Daniel Amen has defined six types of ADD: classic ADD, inattentive ADD, over-focused ADD, temporal lobe ADD, limbic system ADD, and ring of fire ADD.4
