Research Notes on ADHD Treatment

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) treatment typically includes the use of medication and counseling. Different types of medications such as stimulants, non-stimulant medications, and antidepressants are used to treat ADHD. Psychotherapy, behavior therapy, family therapy, social skills training, support groups, and parenting skills training are helpful in the treatment of ADHD and any coexisting conditions.1

Fast Facts:

  • Clonidine and guanfacine may be prescribed by the doctor to treat aggression associated with ADHD or to reduce tics or insomnia caused by other ADHD medication.1
  • Behavior therapy can be more beneficial when used in combination with medication than when used by itself.2
  • With the use of stimulant medications, improvement of symptoms is seen in about 70% of those who have ADHD.2
