Research Notes on ADHD Misdiagnosis
There are cases when ADHD is misdiagnosed. This is because diagnosis comes from a series of questionnaires and observations from teachers and parents.1 There are also a number of conditions that mimic ADHD, which could cause a misdiagnosis.2
Fast Facts:
- If a child's behavior is not affecting school work, they do not have ADHD.1
- Conditions that can mimic ADHD include learning disabilities, petit mal seizures, middle ear infection, anxiety,2 or bipolar disorder.3
- Children should be screened for other conditions that mimic ADHD in order to avoid a misdiagnosis.1
