Research Notes on ADHD Medications Linked to Rare Deaths
A recent study has shown a potential link between a popular type of ADHD medication and the risk of sudden cardiac death in children. Researchers now believe that stimulant-type medications used in the treatment of ADHD can be especially dangerous in children who have undiagnosed heart conditions. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has stated that while the findings of the study are concerning, physicians should continue to prescribe the medication, but closely monitor children who are taking stimulant medications.1
Fast Facts:
- Children with cardiac issues are at a seven fold increase in risk of sudden death.2
- Approximately 2.5 million children and teens in the U.S. regularly use stimulant medications as a treatment for ADHD.1
- Examples of stimulant medications used in ADHD treatment include medications such as Ritalin, Concerta, Adderall, and Dexedrine.1
