The medications used to treat adults with ADHD are the same as children's medications. The medications available for ADHD can have slightly different effects from individual to individual. One of the three following medication types are usually prescribed for ADHD: stimulants, antidepressants or nonstimulants. Medications should help in the following areas: hyperactivity, verbal and/or behavioral impulsivity, difficulty falling asleep at night, trouble waking up, excessive irritability without cause, episodic explosiveness, unexplained and persistent emotional negativity.
