Research Notes on ADHD Medication Patch

In April 2006, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Daytrana - the first transdermal (skin) patch medication to treat ADHD.1 The skin patch is an alternative method of receiving methylphenidate, a medication commonly sold as Ritalin.1 The patch is worn on the hip for a designated amount of time daily (usually nine hours) and is ideal for children who have difficulty swallowing medications.1 It is recommended for children between the ages of six and twelve.2

Fast Facts:

  • Some experts recommend the patch for teen drivers.3
  • One benefit of this medication is that the parent has the ability to control how long the child is under the influence of the medication by removing the patch when it is not necessary.4
  • In children with significant anxiety, glaucoma, depression, or Tourette's syndrome, other medications may be better tolerated.1
