Research Notes on ADHD Linked to Sleep Problems in Adolescents
Researchers say that children who suffer from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are two to three times more likely to also suffer from insomnia and other sleep disorders. It is believed that treating the sleep disorder may help to reduce ADHD symptoms, as a lack of restful sleep can exacerbate hyperactivity. Without treatment, researchers say, children suffering from sleep disorders and ADHD are at a higher risk of developing other conditions.1
Fast Facts:
- A childhood diagnosis of ADHD is likely to be followed by a lifetime of sleep disorders.2
- Sleep terrors, nightmares, snoring, and bruxism are more common in children with ADHD.2
- Approximately 17% of children with ADHD will suffer from insomnia, compared to 7% of children without the disorder.2
