Research Notes on ADHD Brain Changes
Researchers are currently studying the effects that ADHD has on brain changes. One portion of the brain currently being studied is the frontal lobes of the cerebrum (the largest part of the brain). This is the part of the brain that allow us to solve problems, plan ahead, understand the behavior of others, and restrain our impulses. The goal of this research is to better understand the possible causes of ADHD and discover better ways of treating this condition. 1
Fast Facts:
- Research has shown that children who use medication to treat their condition had fewer anatomical brain abnormalities.2
- The brains of boys and girls with ADHD are 3% to 4% smaller than the brains of children without ADHD.3
- The white matter of the brain that is responsible for transmitting information is less in children with ADHD and who are not on medication to treat ADHD.1
