Research Notes on ADHD/ADD in Teenagers

Eight to 10% of school-aged children have ADHD/ADD, and the condition is rarely outgrown by the time the child becomes an adolescent.1 Some ADHD/ADD cases are not diagnosed until the child reaches the teen years. The symptoms of ADHD in teens is similar to those in children: distractibility, irritability, hyperactivity, insomnia, impulsivity, and poor concentration.1 It is sometimes hard to differentiate between normal hormone fluctuations and ADHD symptoms in teens, and the shifting of hormone levels may, in fact, make ADHD symptoms worse.1

Fast Facts:

  • Sitting in the front of the class, turning off electronic communications devices when doing homework, and having open discussions about ADHD with instructors can help at school.2
  • Young drivers with ADHD are at an increased risk for traffic accidents, so keep distractions to a minimum while driving.2
  • It is important to continue with ADHD treatment (or commit to treatment if a diagnosis is recent) throughout the teen years. Medications and behavioral therapy are often effective in treating ADHD/ADD.3
