Research Notes on ADHD/ADD and Sleeplessness
Some experts believe that as many as 70 to 80% of ADHD patients suffer from sleep disorders.1 There are various reasons why you may not be getting a good night's sleep, such as medication side effects, restless legs syndrome and sleep apnea.1 Insomnia is a common side effect of most stimulant medications used to manage this condition.2 Studies show that if a child suffers from ADHD and has a sleep disorder as well, the ADHD symptoms improve once the sleep problem is treated.1
Fast Facts:
- Proper treatment of a sleep disorder can result in a decreased need for ADHD medications.3
- Always consult with your physician before taking any over the counter medications or herbal supplements to help you or or your child sleep.
- Daytrana, the ADHD transdermal patch, may be beneficial for children who are unable to sleep due to medication side effects.4
