Research Notes on ADHD/ADD and Genetics
Although the exact cause of ADHD/ADD has not been found, research is increasingly pointing towards a genetic cause.1 It is believed that approximately 75% of diagnosed cases can be traced to genetic factors.2 ADHD tends to run in families with about one in four cases clearly linked to other family members with the disorders.2 If one or more parent has ADHD/ADD, chances are that their children will also develop the condition.3
Fast Facts:
- Other factors such as smoking and brain injury are also being studied by researchers.2
- Studies are currently being conducted to determine whether there is a definitive link between ADHD/ADD and genetics.1
- About one-third of fathers with ADHD have children that have it as well.
