Research Notes on ADD Diagnosis Tests
There is no single test that can definitively determine whether a person has ADD/ADHD.1 In the United States, most physicians and mental health professionals evaluate patients in accordance with the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV), 4th edition.2
Fast Facts:
- The DSM-IV lists examples of various behaviors that are associated with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, and physicians often need to review both past and present behaviors in order to make an accurate diagnosis.2
- When seeking a diagnosis, it is important to consult with medical and mental health professionals who are experienced in diagnosing developmental and behavioral disorders.1
- If you think you or your child may have ADHD, see our quizzes based on the DSM-IV criteria: for you and for your child.
