Research Notes on ABO Blood Typing
ABO blood typing is a method used to determine what kind of blood a person has. The particular kind of blood depends on the combination of proteins called antigens and the amount of antibodies in the blood. The four categories of blood types are A, B, O and AB.1 It is important to have a blood type match when receiving a blood transfusion. An incompatible blood type can cause the body's immune system to attack the blood which may result in a serious infection or death.2
Fast Facts:
- Type O is considered a universal blood type that is compatible with all other blood types.2
- Blood typing can be used to test for paternity.3
- Different animals such as cows, apes and sheep also have ABO blood typing.4
- Each blood type consists of two co-dominant alleles and one recessive allele inherited from one's parents.5
- Some people inherit a certain protein of the red blood cells called the Rh factor or antigen D.5
