Research Notes on A-a Oxygen Gradient
The A-a oxygen gradient is a measure of how effectively oxygen is being transferred from the lungs to the blood.1 In a healthy lung, when inhaling would match exhaling exactly, there would be no difference between these two and the gradient would be zero.2 The gradient is most effective when the patient has been breathing “ambient air” for at least five minutes.1
Fast Facts:
- A mismatch of the V/Q levels is the most common cause of hypoxemia.2
- The hypoxemia caused from this can be corrected by giving 100% oxygen.2
- If the PaO2 level remains low with the use of oxygen, a shunt can be used.2
